Waikanae AFC beat Karori in the Hilton Petone Cup – Match report

Our journey in the Hilton Petone continued with a game at Maidstone Park in Upper Hutt against Karori a team that will play two divisions higher than us.

The boys had trained hard all week and were full of confidence following last week’s win but this would be another big challenge for us against a team that are well organised and having quality players.

The game started with both team going `hell for leather` for that first goal,  we had a couple of half chances but no luck 20 minutes in all square 0 -0. Then a through ball sent Taku clear and as the goalkeeper approach he slipped the ball square to TJ who netted very calmly 1 – 0  Waikanae.

For the rest of the half our midfield battled really hard, working together as a unit against strong opposition, we defended our lead superbly with Chris marshalling the defence brilliantly.

Half Time 1 – 0

Team talk was about continuing to do the simple things right , keep working for each other and show the same passion as we had shown in the first 45 minutes – the boys knew Karori would come out second half all fired up.

Second Half started as the first ended with both team fully committed and for long periods the game was played in the midfield with no side giving an inch.

75 minutes into the game the ball was played down our right flank Dan Jessop outpaced the centre half and then placed the ball in the back of the net passed the diving goal keeper 2 – 0 Waikanae.

We then had a chance for a third when a cannonball of a shot from Josh H forced a fine save from the keeper.

The final 10 minutes Karori push to try and get back into the game – pushed extra players forward but the players battled for each other throwing their  bodies on the line to deny any goal scoring opportunities.

Karori best chance fell in stoppage time when Jarrod made a fabulous point blank save to keep a clean sheet.

Final Score 2 -0 win.

The players fully deserved the win and again came away with victory over a much higher placed team. The boys were delighted and very much looking forward to our final group match.
