July 6th – Masters 3 KCU Babas 6
Well another game where we conceded far too many goals to give ourselves a chance of winning. This time the killer for us was defending corners, not helped by the fact the Babas have an excellent corner taker and a few big units to aim for!
We went 2-0 down but still felt we were playing well and the game hadn’t slipped away from us and we pulled one back in a sweeping move involving Hamish, Sam, Ethan, Rich and Eisa. Eisa buried it, 2-1 and game on…or so we thought.
The rest of the half was an abomination as we conceded four goals without reply, going in at half time 6-1 down. A few choice words were had and we came out much better in the second half.
We pulled a goal back when Babas didn’t clear a corner and Rich was on hand to lash it home via the crossbar from just outside the six yard box. A few minutes later and Amon’s pace got him clear of his marker. He whipped in a cross and Rich was again the fox in the box to side foot it into the bottom corner. 6-3 and 20 minutes minutes to go…
Despite playing really well we couldn’t get another. Jeff had a penalty saved after Eisa was pulled down and Rich had a 20 yard rocket saved acrobatically by the Babas keeper.
All in all a game of two halves. If you’d offered the team the chance to pack up and go home at half team I think a fair few would have – but the turnaround in quality was nothing compared to the turnaround in spirit. We enjoyed the second half, played some great football and had a bit of a laugh. Everyone ran their socks off and showed the famous Masters Spirit is alive and well!
After the game a few of us went back to the Jolly and had a beer with the KCU’s boys. Yesterday’s game was mostly played in good spirit and Joe did an excellent job refereeing for us again.
Eisa goal has him on 8 for the season, an excellent return for someone playing their first season in the 11 a side game.
Rich was voted man of the match, with Ethan a close second but to be honest anyone could have got it based on the second half display. Jeff got donkey for missing the penalty – although we have now missed every penno we’ve been awarded this season!
We finish the league season next week with a very tough game up in Otaki. This time we’ll try not to give them a 7 goal headstart!!
