March 14 – Pre-season friendly vs Tuataras/Tractor Boys/Coasters
The Wanderers played the new Waikanae Team – the Tuataras – in an epic pre season friendly yesterday. Due to the ban of all European football this represented the highest standard of football played – possibly world wide – this weekend. This was proved by Simon Masters doing 5 keepy uppys before passing back to his goalkeeper – ever seen Virgil Van Dyke do that? No you haven’t.
The Tuataras, thanks to the excellence of some of their young players were 4-0 up with about 60 minutes played. Queue the epic comeback…
Joe made a stunning save and seconds later we were down the other end and won a corner. Dave swung it in and Stef planted a firm header past their goalie. A few minutes later and another corner was buried, this time by Hamish McMuffin, who had drifted in to the 6 yard box unmarked.
We then won a free kick on the edge of the area. Ryan swung it in and Stef met it with a firm diving header. Calls of offside were ignored by the ref (who had an excellent game) as Stef had angled his run perfectly. 4-3 and about 10 minutes left!
With only a few minutes to go a nice passing move down the left led to the ball being squared across the box. Steve ran on to it and hit a firm shot which smacked the cross bar and bounced down. A few of thought it had crossed the goal line and were howling for a VAR check but there was no need. A Tuatara player headed it clear and Ryan was on hand to smash the ball back in to the roof of the net and make it 4-4.
All in all it was a great game played in some stunning weather. Thanks to Amon for refereeing and thanks to GG and Charlie for getting a team together and giving us an excellent game. Good luck for the new season boys!
