22 May vs Manakau Tuakana Teina

Manakau Tuakana Teina 4 Wanderers 3
After a great run of form the Wanderers were brought crashing back down to earth after Manakau Tuakana Teina fought back from 3-1 down just after half time to clinch a late winner and take the 3 points in a hard fought game.
The Wanderers started strongly and the first 10 minutes of the game was played in the Manakau half, but it was Manakau who took the lead after a break in midfield, an excellent ball over the top and despite Joe’s valiant double save he couldn’t stop the 3rd follow up and the Wanderers were 1-0 down.
Rather than heads dropping however the boys in red and black regrouped and fought back with a brilliant through-ball from Amon which birthday boy Jayden slid in to convert – unfortunately clattering the Manakau goalkeeper in the process. After a swap in keepers a corner kick led to an unfortunate own goal and Wanderers went in 2-1 ahead at halftime. In reality Wanderers could have added a couple more but for some disappointing finishing and some slices of bad luck.
A brilliant run and shot from captain Jack Madden put Wanderers 3-1 just after half time and it seemed the 3 points would be in the bag.
However Manakau Tuakana Teina are clearly a team that do not give up! They fought back with two goals – one an spectacular own goal from an attempted clearance – and with 10 minutes to go it was 3-3. After Wanderers failed to convert a host of chances it was Manakau who snatched a late winner and took home the 3 points.
For the Wanderers it was a lesson not to take their foot of the gas – even when 2 goals clear – as every team in this division has guts and fight in them and will hurt you if you do.
Man of the match was Marcelo – who was outstanding in midfield, although honourable mentions go to Tom and Amon who were devastating down the right flank at times.
We go again next week against another team that will fight for the whole 90 – KCU Bandits – so nothing less than 100% will suffice. Luckily the lads know they are capable of doing that and will be itching to recover from this disappointing defeat.
