17 April vs Paekak Central

Paekākāriki Central 2 – Waikanae Wanderers 2
Another brilliant performance against a team that we usually struggle against on a beautiful day down at Campbell Park.
Wanderers took the lead after a fantastic passing move down the right led to a corner. Amon delivered an absolute peach and Phil rose like a salmon to plant home a header and get his first goal of the season. We had been working on corners in training on Wednesday so it was awesome to see the lads hard work pay off.
Paekākāriki equalized when we failed to clear our lines after an attack down our left and for a while it was end to end football with chances for both teams.
Wanderers took the lead again when Ethan powered in to the box and was clipped by one of the men in green and black and the man in yellow (the ref!) pointed straight to the spot. Hamish McMuffin stepped up and planted a beauty of a pen in to the top right corner.
Sadly we couldn’t hold our lead and after a period of pressure and a mix up at the back we gave away a soft freekick for a backpass. Paekākāriki scored and it was game on with about 20 minutes to play.
Again it was end to end stuff and our defense scrambled well to deny them a winning goal – including a brilliant double save from Foxy in goal.
With about 5 minutes to go Eisa was played through and we all held our breath but the Paekākāriki defense recovered – got two men back and put him under pressure and his effort went just wide – so close!
It finished 2-2 which we all agreed represented a fair result. This has seen us pick up 2 valuable points against higher division opposition already this season – and next week we play Div 1 team The Strollers.
There were numerous contenders for man of the match but in the end it went as a joint award to Jez and Craig – who both but in monumental shifts in unfamiliar positions.
Thanks Paekākāriki for your hospitality – its always a please to share a beer with you lads afterwards. Best of luck for the remainder of the season!
We go again next week at Jim Cooke Park versus The Strollers.
